Re: [GreenYes] Dole on GE foods
I like the personal touch the responding Dole representative added by the
way it was signed.

A few months ago, I asked Dole what the plastic stuff on the stems of their
organic banana bunches was. I was told that it was a food-grade plastic.

I then asked, what kind of food grade plastic? To which they told me that it
was a food grade plastic that was approved for food contact by the FDA.

I tried a different tack, expecting to throw them "off guard" and answer the
question completely, by asking... "What is the chemical name of the food
grade plastic that was approved for food contact by the FDA that you use on
the stems of your Dole organic bananas?" I figured I was quite foxy, and
they'd have no way out. I waited for the
response....................................................................
.......................................................

No response. I emailed again, asking for a telephone number. They responded
by asking what my telephone number was so they could call me.

We talked. Things were different this time I thought. Instead of writing to
a droid, this time I was talking to a droid. It was the company line all the
way...no legitimate answers.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Does anyone on this list know what that darned food grade plastic that has
been approved by the FDA for contact with food that Dole is using on their
organic bananas? Pretty please, with sugar on it. I know that it's there to
prevent a black mold that is typical for bananas. The way they handle it
with commercial (pesticide-ridden) bananas is to paint on a fungicide. I am
wondering if this plastic has a fungicide in it or on it.
