Household batteries such as AAA, Everreaddy types are made a different way so 
as not to be toxic (as toxic?) in landfills. My town still recycles them 
through the County Hazardous Waste Recycling Day. They are extremely heavy. 
RBRC has a great program to recycle the batteries in cordless phones, 
camcorders, cordless power tools and laptops. They will e-mail you a 
registration form and any person or retail store can send their batteries to 
them free of charge.
