[GRRN] Political Winds -- Global Warming...and Beyond?

According to this morning's Wall Street Journal, the Business Roundtable
"is calling for a national summit on how business and government might
speed the development and use of energy efficient devices ... to help
combat climate change."

Sounds good? Not clear. In view of their concomittant request to employ a
20 year conversion time line, and, most revealingly, postpone discussion
until after the 2000 election, this -- combined with George Bush's apparent
poll-based sudden conversion to Global Warming Awareness -- suggests that
there is some extremely strong polling data that is frightening the larger
corporations and pushing them to cut their losses and, above all us, keep
the issue out of the elections where they might determine the result.

If this is what is going on, I can't help but think that that kind of
rising public opinion would be broader on environmental issues than just
global warming. Does anyone know what's out there and how it may implicate
recycling?
