Kendall, You raised some good questions to clarify our Residential Organics Project. Please note that this project is concerned with more than just food scraps. In most parts of the country, food soiled paper is a significant portion of residential organics as well. Q1 - Are you focused solely on vehicular collection of source-separated organics? A1 - No. As you know, some communities have chosen to collect some residential organics (food scraps) through their sewer system where they have sufficient capacity in their sewer lines and wastewater treatment processing capacity. We would welcome your suggestion of some examples of communities in Region 9 that have made a conscious decision to direct food scraps in that manner as well, particularly if they have technical data that they can share with us. Q2 - Processing in composting facilities that only accept food scraps and/or yard waste? A2 - We ARE interested in composting facilities that only accept food scraps, so that we can better understand any advantages of composting those materials separately. We are NOT interested in composting facilities that only accept yard trimmings, as that is not the focus of our research. Q3 - Are you interested in energy recovery from processing operations? A3 - We are interested in obtaining examples of energy and fuels recovery from processing of food scraps, or portions of food scraps (e.g., biodiesel production).
