Know nothing of Cargill's work....but I do know that Patagonia Clothing was looking at a corn based alternative to polyester fleece. They came to the astounding conclusion that while it has significant environmental benefit, they could not be assured the manufacturer was not using GMO corn for the material, and hence refused it. Their write up on it pointed out that it is not necessarily recyclable....but compostable!
