Rose: You may want to cantact William Rathje, (rathjewl@no.address) the author of the 2001 book called "Rubbish" (co written by Cullen Murphy from the Atlantic Monthly) to obtain the most recent actual decomposition data. One of his chapters is entitled, Landfill Excavation, and includes Into the Unknown and the Myths of Biodegradation. He has been engaged in ongoing studies that bury and dig up waste in landfills to look at ACTUAL decomposition. He is currently at Stanford University as a visiting professor. Their switchboard would be able to get you some info on his office number.
