I'd be happy with that at my house, since the six of us only put out a bag a
week.  I know some municipalities in Rhode Island experimented with it and
the reports about the results were posted on their website.  If it's no
longer there, then I'm sure you could contact RIRRC and they could dig up
the information for you.  I'd be interested in hearing some of your results
as well.  My guess is that alternate pickups would work pretty well where
(especially) odor and rodents/animals aren't a major problem.

the next for recycling. We are considering such a schedule because we
have only one truck and driver to pick up each week. We have heard
that Eugene, Oregon, and Friday Harbor, Washington, use the same
schedule, but we are wondering if there are other communities doing
this as well. If you are unable to give us this information, we would
appreciate it if you could give us some ideas of where else to ask.
