Yes, it is true that historically recycled paper costs more than virgin
fiber paper. For the past 3 years deinked postconsumer recycled pulp has
actually been cheaper than virgin softwood and hardwood pulp in the U.S.
pulp market...thus from a cost of goods standpoint, recycled paper is
cheaper to produce given current market conditions.
Our non-profit cooperative purchasing program for recycled paper has been
successful at removing the price barriers to using recycled copy paper by
using its purchasing volume to reduce copy paper prices. The Recycled
Products Purchasing Cooperative was originally funded by the U.S. EPA and
has converted over 350 members to using recycled paper. If interested,
