Mike Morrow asked: "You made a comment about processing bottles into bales degrades the
plastic.
How so?"
That may not have been the most precise choice of words on my part. The primarily
degradation refers to the loss in the ability to optically sort the bottles because baling
densifies bottles approximately 30:1. Because they are clumped and covered with
contaminants such as dirt and grease in the bale, the ability to read the optical signal
accurately is
significantly compromised. However, the resin itself is only degraded to the extent that
those contaminants are difficult to wash off. That is the lesser of the problems which I
was intended to reference.
