Anyone have a handle on how to convert single stream volumes to tons? I know that the average weight will be different for curbside vs. commercial single stream - and there will be variations in types of commercial properties. Just wondering if anyone has done any work on what the average weights might be for various scenarios. I'm not looking for a break out by material type, just an average weight for a cubic yard of single stream recyclables. As part of it's new recycling ordinance properties are required to report their tons (or estimates by converting volumes to tons) of trash vs. recyclables on an annual basis. We are developing a calculator that will allow those who have volume based collection to provide us with tonnage estimates. However, single stream commercial collection is in place in some cases and I have yet to find average weights that can be used specifically for converting volume to tons for single stream collection.
