[GreenYes] Re: Purchasing specifications - environmentally benign pressure sensitive adhesives

I'm pretty sure they've addressed this problem through AF&PA. I've cc:ed a
consultant and their manager to see what they know about this issue and
how it's been addressed.

Hi John/List:

Gosh, hard to believe we don't have a handle on the stickie problem yet. I
wrote about it over 10 years ago when I was with the Recycling Council of
BC. AT that time there was a US organization called "Inter-Association
Council for Printing and Publishing Paper Recycling", formed 1989 to deal
with it. The Magazine Publishers of America did a report on stickies.
Similar efforts to bring "stakeholders" together happened in Canada. You
might Google these associations.

Purchasing policies are a pressure tool -- but it's nice to know the state
of industry readiness. Problem with adhesives is they are buried in the
supply chain.

Does anyone know of any local or state purchasing specifications for the

Last week, a speaker at the Wisconsin Governor's Blue Ribbon Task Force on
Waste Materials and Recovery said that the three biggest problems facing
the paper recycling industry are stickies, stickies and stickies.

Besides the work of the Task Force, the Wisconsin Council on Recycling is
also working to reduce the use of pressure sensitive adhesives that are
not compatible with recycling.

Thanks much,
