[GreenYes] Online shopping - environmental benefits or not?

I've seen a number of references lately about how online shopping is good for the environment.  Has this ever been rigorously analyzed?  It would seem that there could be savings in transport energy since the loads coming by delivery truck would generally be more full than individual autos at a shopping mall.  However, the packaging often seems are more excessive on the individual shipments than the bulk shipments to a store.
