RE: [greenyes] Juice pouch/box recycling

Beverage companies using these pouches are required to arrange for them to be returned for refunds in British Columbia (and possibly other Cdn provinces). The agency that the beverage producers established to handle the recycling system, Encorp Pacific, has a website with info on containers included:

www.encorpinc.com

Last I heard it was very challenging to find a market for these containers -- though as you can imagine it will be easier for a large single agency marketing them in large quantities than for a small school H.O.M.E. program. This is why producer responsibility makes sense. But if the containers prove difficult and expensive to recycle, then the producers will likely look for a different packaging.

Well, I wish they sold more juice in cans or plastic. (Which by the way, you have to be careful, some juice comes in non-recyclable plastic bottles.)

I think NYC and RI (RIRRC) has programs in place.

Subject: [greenyes] Juice pouch/box recycling

Greetings!

I received the following email from a visitor to our site:

"I have searched, without success, for a facility that accepts juice pouces/boxes for recycling. Might you have any information or direction I may follow to come to some resolve?

"I live in Michigan and we currently are collecting all juice pouches generated at the school my children attend. We clean them and recycle them into items for sale at the school store, using all profits for our H.O.M.E- Helping Our Mother Earth Program. At the end of the school year we still have a surplus (several hundred) and I cannot dispose of them."

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!
