Support Letters to Governor Urgently Needed on Tire Recycling Bill

We have a real shot at getting a signature on a tire recycling bill with the potential to increase the recycling of 4-6 million used tires annually. More than 30 million used tires are generated in California annually. And while nearly half are currently recycled, some 15 million are stockpiled--legally and illegally--around the state, posing a real and serious public health and environmental threat.
You probably recall the major tire fires at Tracy (1998) and Panoche (1996), in which as many as 8.5 million tires went up in smoke. Tire fires can have far-reaching effects on public safety and the environment, including contamination of surface water, groundwater, air, and soil. These fires are next to impossible to put out once they start ? by lightning, grass fires or even arson.

Assembly Bill 338 (Levine) would help address this problem by increasing market demand for recycled tires in California. Specifically, AB 338 requires CalTrans to use increasing levels of Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (RAC) made from used tires on highway paving projects. If adopted, this measure has the potential to recycle 4 to 5 million used tires annuallytires that would otherwise pose a significant threat to human health and the environment.

Please take a few minutes to send a letter to the Governor on this important issue. We wouldn?t ask you to do this if we didn?t believe that it could really make a difference.
