[GreenYes] RE: phonebook recycling
In the Southeast, BellSouth has withdrawn much of their support for Old
Telephone Directory recycling, which formerly took the form of a subsidized
scrap value, logistical support and advertising for 'Telephone Boook
Roundup' collection events conducted through local nonprofits. Major users
of mixed paper do accept OTD, and insulation manufacturers also provide a
market for sorted OTD, usually at a price without real fundraising
potential. BellSouth Advertising and Publishing Company (BAPCO) took an
early lead in redesign of their directories for recyclability, using
water-soluble glue and soy-based inks, but the independent publishers
haven't necessarily joined in, leaving the average stream of OTD
contaminated.
This is a case where voluntary Extended Producer Responsibility has
backtracked.
