To show that sustainable development in action really works, Earthlife Africa (ELA), together with their international network partners, Global Alliance for Incineration Alternatives (GAIA), and the World Summit on Sustainable Development Civil Society Secretariat, are striving to ensure that this year's Summit will be a Zero Waste event. This translates into an 80 to 90% reduction in waste produced, and a 20% reduction in water and energy consumption at the WSSD NGO Global Forum at NASREC, where an anticipated 45000 delegates, and about 15000 South Africans will be daily during the Summit in August - September.
To launch the campaign, Earthlife Africa (ELA) is having a Zero Waste (ZW) Pre-Summit Party on Saturday morning, 6 July 2002, from 10am onwards. Green Trust Award - winning Trash Truck will be performing, as will many others. Drumming from the Mass Appeal Street Kids and township music, dancing and theatre from Tilfanelo Drums, Sukuma All Star Band, African Devoted Artists and Ilima, as well as street performers and your favourite Isidingo stars dressed in fashion from waste, who will be signing autographs at the Zero Waste Pre- summit party. Kids can enjoy banner painting too.
Come and join in the fun from 10 AM in the PARK at Newtown Cultural Precinct (parking available at Mega Music), entrance free.
Earthlife Africa's Zero Waste co-ordinator, Muna Lakhani, says: "Implementing a Zero Waste system at NASREC will be one way in which South African Civil Society can shine. ZW is a way of thinking that changes our approach to resources and production. It is about recycling and diversion from landfills, but it is also about restructuring production and distribution systems to prevent waste being manufactured in the first place."
Media packs regarding the project will be available at the pre-summit party. Great photo ops, and good news for all! Spread the word....
