OLYMPIC ORGANIZERSī RECYCLING PLAN SCORES
LOW WITH ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP

SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 31) -- Olympic organizersī
plans to handle trash at the upcoming Winter
Games are being criticized by a notable recycling
group.

The GrassRoots Recycling Network, which has
made a name for itself over the years in
part by targeting Coca-Cola Co.īs recycling
efforts, is picking another high-profile
target.

But thatīs not to say GRRN is completely
dissatisfied with what the Salt Lake
Organizing Committee is doing in terms of
waste and recycling planning for the
upcoming Winter Olympics.

An earlier plan to mix waste and recyclables
in one container that would then be sorted
off-site has apparently been scrapped after
recyclers met with Olympic organizers.

"We are not in favor of that as a resource
management strategy," said Bill Sheehan,
executive director or the Athens, Ga.-based
GRRN.

Mixing all the materials together would lead
to contamination of recyclables. "Garbage
in, garbage out," Sheehan said. The
resulting compost also could run the risk of
contamination because of the mixed waste
stream, he said.

Olympic organizers convened a daylong forum
and invited those interested in the issue
after hearing concerns about the single-bin
approach, said Laynee Jones, manager of
waste, recycling, cleaning and snow removal.
