The Arizona Republic
Allied Waste Industries Inc. of Phoenix has joined with RecycleBank in a nationwide program to reward customers who recycle with gift certificates and merchandise discounts.
Launching this week in Dallas,Ft. Worth, Texas, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis and St. Paul, it is expected to expand to all of Allied's 7 million residential customers by early 2009. Allied Waste has about 240,000 customers in Arizona, including clients in Phoenix and Mesa.
Up until now, RecycleBank's service has only been available in the Northeast and Midwest.
RecycleBank of New York keeps track of recyclables by embedding radio frequency identifiers in recycling carts. Based on the weight, RecycleBank awards points that customers can use to earn certificates and discounts at about 400 retailers. The average family gets about $200 in awards. Recycle Bank was founded in 2005.
Allied Waste, the nation's second-largest waste-management company, is being purchased by Republic Services Inc. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., for about $6 billion.
