[GreenYes] FW: PSI Announces 3 New Product Dialogues - FluorescentLamps, Medical Sharps, and Pharmaceuticals

- Please excuse any cross postings -

Dear Colleagues:

PSI is starting up 3 new national product stewardship dialogues:

·         Fluorescent Lamps

·         Medical Sharps

·         Pharmaceuticals

This email is to update you on these dialogues and to ask whether you would like to participate.

Fluorescent Lamps

PSI will soon release a draft Product Stewardship Action Plan on Fluorescent Lighting for review and comment. We are also planning a first National Dialogue meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah in April. In addition, we have begun two pilot retail collection projects.

  • PSI and Women’s Voices for the Earth have started to design a pilot retail collection project for fluorescent lamps and mercury-containing thermostats in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, and Utah, where we are working with utilities and state government in those states. Ace hardware stores will collect these items for recycling from May through December 2008. PSI will create a “how-to” document for retailers based on the results of the project.

  • PSI and Washington Citizens for Resource Conservation will be expanding the Take it Back Network in Washington State to engage additional retailers in the collection of fluorescent lamps.

EPA Region 8 has provided funding for the retail pilot and first National Dialogue meeting.  Washington Department of Ecology has provided funding for two subsequent national dialogue meetings, tentatively scheduled for July and October. Funding is still being sought for a fourth National Dialogue meeting.

Medical Sharps

PSI is currently conducting background research, including interviews with representatives from the medical sharps industry, government agencies, and other key stakeholders. A Project Summary has been developed that will be updated as new information is obtained. The research and interviews will then be used to develop a Product Stewardship Action Plan for Medical Sharps, which will serve as the basis for four face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders. The first meeting will be held in Boston in April or May. The Action Plan will include an issue statement, dialogue goals, key issues, and potential solutions. As part of this project, PSI will identify areas in which the sharps disposal issue overlaps with the broader pharmaceutical disposal issue.

This project is being managed by Susan Frechette, PSI Senior Associate for Policy and Programs.  If you are interested in more information, please contact Susan at susan@no.address or 617-236-4866.

Pharmaceuticals

PSI has begun a separate effort on pharmaceuticals disposal management and has conducted over 30 stakeholder interviews and developed a Project Prospectus and a  Project Summary. A draft Product Stewardship Action Plan for Unwanted/Waste Pharmaceuticals is also being developed. We are planning a first National Dialogue meeting in Sacramento, California in mid-June in partnership with the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
