FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LIVE IN MASSACHUSETTS, YOU MAY WANT TO BE AWARE OF A BOTTLE BILL HEARING SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18TH AT 10 AM IN BOSTON Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy, 10:00 AM, State House, Room A-2 Sierra Club, MASSPIRG, and other environmental groups, have sponsored legislation in conjunction with Rep. Douglas Petersen (H1379) to update the bottle bill, adding water, sports drinks, teas, and other beverages. This update includes ?new age? drinks, bottled water, iced teas, and sports drinks, plus other beverages. Sen. Robert O?Leary has introduced legislation to repeal the bottle bill, and replace it with a New Jersey style litter tax. His ?Tax On Everything Bill? would tax consumers, businesses, manufacturers, restaurants, grocers, and just about everything else ? in a massive bureaucratic effort that wouldn?t even raise enough to clean up all the new litter that would be created. The NJ Litter Tax, being promoted by the bottling industry as ?better? than the bottle bill, is a failure in New Jersey. Importing it to Massachusetts would be a giant step backwards. If you think the state's bottle bill should be expanded and/or you oppose repeal of the bottle bill........ * Come to the hearing. As you know, a good turnout will help the bills passage. * Submit written testimony for the hearing. * Send a letter to the editor of your local paper.
