ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCE NEWS (EARN) News Brief WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 28, 2005; 1:50 p.m. EDT) -- Senators John E. Sununu (R-N.H.) and Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) propose to limit taxpayer subsidies for building logging roads in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. Through an amendment to the Interior Appropriations Bill, which will likely come to a vote later today, the senators seek to prevent a situiation where taxpayer expenditures far exceed economic benefits. The U.S. Forest Service lost an estimated $48 million last year, with only about $800,000 in revenue, according to Senator Sununu and a Washington Post editorial today. - 30 - |
