So far, in the 2003-2004 legislative session, at least 126 bills to restrict or recycle mercury-containing products have been introduced at the state, local or federal level in the US, with at least 20 having been adopted into law. In the latest estimate available, about 240 tons of mercury are used in products in the US each year, compared to about 48 tons that are emitted from coal-burning power plants annually.
