[greenyes] Marijuana Smuggled in Cross-Border Trash Imports
- Subject: [greenyes] Marijuana Smuggled in Cross-Border Trash Imports

from Solid Waste Report - October 31, 2003
CUSTOMS BUREAU PERSONNEL detected a ton of marijuana hidden inside a trash
truck that was crossing a bridge from Canada last month, thanks to new
ultra-sensitive technology. It is likely more border crossings will be using
the equipment in their search for contraband. The new equipment detects
changes in density within a shipment. The gear, along with new radiological
detection gear, is part of the post-9/11 border-security campaign.
The radiological-detection equipment intercepts two to three trash trucks
loaded with radioactive medical waste per week. Customs officials sent them
back to Canada. However, officials will stay busy - about 200 trash trucks
enter Michigan each day from Canada.
