RECYCLING AND RESOURCE  RECOVERY ASSISTANT

$2,891 - $3,758 monthly plus excellent benefits

The Environmental Health Division's Recycling Program promotes and supports
activities to reduce, reuse, and recycle discarded materials in the County
of Monterey and to meet the State mandate to reduce waste by 50%. Specific
program areas include commercial, residential, and organic waste; market
development; and used motor oil recycling. Public outreach is an integral
part of these programs.

The Recycling Resource and Recovery Assistant works under the general
supervision of the Solid Waste Section Supervisor in collaboration with two
Recycling and Resource Recovery Specialists and two other Recycling and
Resource Recovery Assistants. The position assists in the implementation of
programs and services to increase awareness and participation of recycling
and waste reduction by residents and businesses.

SIGNIFICANT DUTIES
* Assist with development and implementation of waste reduction and
recycling programs for residents, businesses, special events, and county
government.
* Assist with the preparation and distribution of resource recovery and
recycling program information.
* Update and maintain promotional and educational materials including
directories, materials exchange databases, websites, and other information
resources.
* Prepare recycling and waste diversion statistical and narrative reports.
* Prepare and deliver presentations to community groups.
* Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A combination of experience, education and/or training which substantially
demonstrates the following knowledge and skills:

Knowledge of: Laws and ordinances affecting recycling programs; Waste
reduction methods and resources; Recycling techniques and programs related
to the environment, energy conservation and the economy; Research methods
and practices; Public relations and advertising approaches to gain support
and compliance.

Skill to: Work independently, and as a team member, to plan, coordinate, and
implement programs; Prepare and present clear and concise reports and
recommendations, both written and oral; Develop and maintain computerized
databases; Use spreadsheets and graphics software; Provide excellent
customer service; Establish and maintain effective working relationships
with staff, other agencies, the general public, and the business community.

Licenses: Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
* Bilingual English/Spanish skills are desired.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
* Incumbents may be required to work occasional nights and weekends as
assigned. Typically, multiple evenings and weekends may be required during
the peak event months of April through October.

3. Describe your experience preparing narrative and statistical reports and
maintaining records.

4. Describe your experience delivering informational presentations to the
public.
