[GreenYes] City bans the sale of mercury containing products
Ashland, Wisconsin has taken the historic move -- first local community in
the country, I
believe -- to ban the sale and distribution of all products containing more
than 50 milligrams of mercury, with the exception of dental amalgams. With a
population of about 8,600, Ashland is located on the shore of Lake Superior
in northwest Wisconsin

The ordinance also requires that as part of building demolition, all mercury
containing devices must be removed.

The penalty is a fine of not less than $100, plus the cost of prosecution,
and the effect date is August 15, 2002.

Congratulations to city staff, and to the very progressive City Council and
businesses of the City of Ashland !
