[GreenYes] Fwd: [hcwh] Seeking info on leaching from plastics
Dear GRRN friends:

This is an important discussion going on within the Health Care Without Harm discussion group. Can any one provide any insight?  Thanks.

[Sorry if any of you get this twice... I first tried posting it to the old HCWH list address.]

Hey folks,

I'm trying to help Heather (see message below) find information on chemicals that leach from plastics, as I'm interested in this question as well.  Besides the well-known issues with PVC and phthalates, are there other studies out there that anyone can point us to?  Do the phthalates in plastic #1 (PET or polyethylene terephthalate) leach as well?

Hello,

I am writing to you all today to get some facts straight about plastics leachate.  It is good for us to know which plastics do and don't leach toxic chemicals such as phthalates, nonylphenol, and styrene.  So far, I am aware of PVC and Polystyrene leaching toxic chemicals.  What other plastics out there definitely leach possibly harmful chemicals?  What about plastics 1, 2, 4, 5, 7?  Some people say drinking water bottles (usually  1 or 2) or baby bottles leach, but I've seen no documentation of this.

I think we need to be clear on this matter.  We can't talk to people about the harm of plastics leachate if we aren't sure ourselves which plastics leach and which don't.  Any pertinent information you can provide is appreciated!

Thanks,

Heather
