I was under the impression that aerosol cans must be punctured by some
machine before being recycled...?

From my understanding all metal cans can be recycled (ugh) hairspray,
whipcream all get crushed by a big heavy machine and at any rate the little
plastic that is on is will be burned up in the red hot molten metal.
