Hi Maggie,
We met in Charlotte last year at the NRC Conference...
I have heard an estimate that there may be a MILLION tons of debris and
rubble to be moved out of NYC before the work is done.  I have also heard
that much of it will be coming here to Virginia, where we have some
"mega-landfills" that are accepting waste from New York since (and before)
Fresh Kills closed.  In fact, they may be using barges to haul it, an option
that VA politicians and citizens have rejected in the past.
As far as recycling goes, you know I'm all for it, but remember that a large
part of what used to be the WTC is now a biohazard site.  I'm afraid it may
not be possible, or even desirable, to sort through the debris to an extent
that the metal is salvageable.  When the rescue operation becomes a recovery
operation and the work proceeds faster, the salvage value of the material
may go down even farther.  
If I hear anything else about operations here in Virginia, I'll let you all
know.

I just heard (CNN) that the tonnage figure is up to 40,000 tons from the 
World Trade Center.  They are hauling it to Fresh Kills landfill where the 
FBI is sifting through it.  I still don't know if the metal is being 
recycled.  Based on the last figure (13,000 tons after 2 days of digging), 
they seem to be doing about 6500 tons per day using cranes and a bucket 
brigade.
