With apologies for cross-posting
The August issue of Scientific American has an interesting article on
biodegradable plastics written by two biochemical engineers. Both have
worked to develop these materials, but they are generally negative on the
environmental impacts of three different types of biodegradable plastics,
saying that their production uses more natural resources than petroleum
based plastics. And they conclude by calling for the development of
non-degradable plastics that would sequester carbon to reduce global climate
change.
An interesting read and perspective.
