Governor Gray Davis has signed a bill which prohibits the sale or use of
lindane for lice and scabies treatments in California. The bill will
take effect January 1, 2002. This bill is very exciting as it mandates
a pollution prevention solution to a water quality problem, disallowing
the use of a highly toxic pesticide in favor of less toxic
alternatives. It also represents, to my knowledge, the first time a
medical treatment has been prohibited to improve water quality.
