Subject: Beer in Plastic Bottles

More information is becoming available concerning the type of PET container
that Miller is planning to use in its test marketing of beer in plastic
next month in Charlotte. Apparently, it's a new type of bottle made by
Continental PET Technologies unlike the three that have been discussed
previously (i.e. PEN copolymer, nylon/EVOH multilayer and barrier coatings)
that involves an oxygen scavanging inner core layer.

I looked up the patent and this is what pops up

Abstract: An oxygen scavenging composition, method of making the same,
and multilayer
container structures thereof which enable accelerated activation of the
oxygen scavenging
property and/or barrier layers to prevent depletion of the oxygen
scavenging property. In making
a container wall, or a precursor thereof such as a preform, a base polymer
is used including
post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PC-PET) and an oxygen scavenger.
A resulting
multilayer package wall may include an oxygen scavenging core layer and an
inner layer of a
material having a high oxygen barrier condition prior to product filling,
and a second lower
oxygen barrier condition after product filling. The inner layer thus allows
oxygen entrapped in
the container during product filling to be transmitted through the inner
layer and absorbed by the
core oxygen scavenging layer, in order to increase the product shelf life.

2 NOVEMBER BROWN BAG GUEST LECTURES
sponsored by REDEFINING PROGRESS

Bring your lunch at join us at:

SPUR (San Francisco Planning and Urban Research)
312 Sutter Street, Suite 500
San Francisco, CA

Please spread the word and help us to invite any interested
people/organizations to join us in welcoming Norman Myers and Vicki Robins
for 2 Brown Bag lunches.

1. Brown Bag lunch with Vicki Robin, author of Your Money or Your Life,
at SPUR on November 3, 1998 @ 12:30pm. (Come after you vote!)
RSVP to Yuri Kasinsky 415-781-1191 ext 300 or kasinsky @rprogress.org by
Monday, November 2.

Vicki Robin is not only the co-author with Joe Dominguez of the
national bestseller, Your Money or Your Life , but she is also the President
of the New Road Map Foundation, an organization run entirely on a volunteer
basis and created to be a nonprofit clearinghouse for the ample proceeds
from the book and seminar series.

"Vicki served on the President's Council on Sustainable Development's
Task Force on Population and Consumption. Called the prophet of
"consumption-downsizers" by the New York Times, she is a frequent speaker on
the issue at conferences-to corporate, academic, religious and environmental
institutions...Vicki delivered testimony on over consumption at the United
Nations to the International Conference on Population and Development
PrepCom." (excerpt from Biographical Sketch of Vicki Robin).

In addition to being a founding member of Sustainable Seattle (a
voluntary civic network concerned w/ long-term cultural, economic and
environmental health of the Puget Sound Region) and a founding Board Member
of the Center for the New American Dream (a national organization with goal
of changing the overall quantity of consumption nationally...without
sacrificing quality of life) she has appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show,"
"Good Morning America," and NPR's " Weekend Edition." Her book has been
translated into numerous languages and the work of Vicki Robin and the New
Road Map Foundation is becoming known internationally.

In the interview "You can be too Rich," for Mirabella (July/August 1997)
Vicki explains her motivation for starting her seminar series with partner
Joe Dominguez, "...First, we felt that there were people with gifts to give
to the world who were being hobbled by issues around money. Second, we were
working with a number of nonprofit organizations-some helped drug addicted
teenagers, the homeless and the hungry-we realized they needed a cash
infusion. So we could put on these seminars, raise money for the
nonprofits, and also raise consciousness in the participants about money."

"...By 1990, they were selling 5, 000 of these a year-"all by mail order and
word of mouth, " Robin notes it was time to write the book. "We wanted to
reach a larger audience, ordinary Americans spending money they don't have
on stuff they don't need and getting themselves into debt that's going to
keep them stuck for years to come. We wanted to make them aware of the
sustainable-development movement: How can we meet the needs of our
generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet
theirs" Mirabella (July/August 1997).

2. Brown Bag lunch with Norman Myers
at SPUR on Nov. 16th, 1998 @ 12:30pm.
RSVP by Thursday, November 12 to Redefining Progress: 415-781-1191 or
kasinsky@rprogress.org. Admission will be on a first come first serve
basis.

Brief Biography

Among his many disciplines and professions (teacher, photographer, colonial
administrator, researcher, scientist) Norman Myers has particularly
advocated for new methods of conservation and ecological sustainability.
The opening quote of his biography illustrates his views on human input into
the changing development of the world,

We are witnessing one of the most remarkable biological phenomena ever to
overtake life on the earth....A Single species our own is eliminating the
planet's genetic stock more rapidly than at any time in the past, except
possibly for those few occasions of geologic cataclysm when a mass
extinction has depleted Earth's biotas.

Norman Myers is currently a researcher, policy analyst, lecturer and author
of eight books and hundreds of scientific papers and articles. He is a
senior fellow at many universities and often does consulting for the White
House, many world Prime Ministers, the World Bank, United Nations agencies,
MacArthur, Rockefeller and Ford Foundations and many large trans-national
corporations.

He has had a very interesting life which began with his childhood in
Yorkshire, England. He grew up in a house with neither electricity nor an
indoor toilet. He went on to work in Kenya with the Overseas Civil Service
and became a British administrator to the Masai peoples in Kenya.
Throughout his years in Kenya he was a teacher, administrator and
photographer. He later enrolled in a graduate program at UC Berkeley in
wildlife biology, and after taking the advice from a professor of his he
returned from a photography career to get his Ph.D. degree from the
University.

By this point in time he had completed numerous world speaking tours, and
had become a consultant in over ninety countries. His specialties had come
to include knowledge of, "...tropical forests , savannas, and grasslands;
threatened species and genetic resources; "gene revolution" agriculture;
sustainable development; resource economics; population growth; the
greenhouse effect; the environmental dimensions of security issues." Much
of his knowledge was self-taught or learned through experience, and refined
in the University. In his biographic materials one biologist refers to him
as, "... a jack-of-all-trades and master of every one..."

------=_NextPart_000_000E_01BE0274.794B6A40-- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 21:47:45 -0500 From: "Bill Sheehan" Subject: Fw: Timber Subsidies Remain To: All Activists From: Jim Jontz Date: October 28, 1998 FINAL DEAL: ADMINISTRATION BUDGET BUTCHERED The details are now available from the Omnibus spending bill approved by the Congress before their adjournment last week, and the Forest Service budget is not a pretty picture. The final agreement includes modest increases of funds over the Senate version of the Interior Appropriations bill for road maintenance, wildlife, and watersheds - a total of $9 million for the three accounts. The Senate roadbuilding budget was also reduced to virtually the level of the Administration's request, and the purchaser road credit is repealed. However, the big disappointment in the final budget was a major increase in funding for timber sales management to $227 million - $28 million more than the original Forest Service request. A chunk of that - $10 million - was added for Alaska as a result of the negotiations that eliminated pro-logging Alaskan riders from the bill. But from any perspective, the bottom line is clearly "timber uber alles." Even with the increases in conference, the final budget includes $7 million less than the Forest Service requested for road maintenance, $11 million less than the agency requested for wildlife, and $8 million less than the agency requested for watershed improvements - with virtually the same amount added to the timber program above the Forest Service request. Where was the Administration in the budget negotiations? Why did they agree to a budget that so butchered the Forest Service's requests, funding more logging than the agency itself wants? How serious can the Administration be about moving the Forest Service toward "restoration" when they sign-off on a budget that cuts requests for these programs to fund more logging? The Forest Service budget the Administration sent to Congress to begin with was horribly unbalanced. Virtually a third of the proposed budget, over $1.0 billion, subsidized logging. Comparatively, the total budget for wildlife, recreation, and watersheds together totaled less than $400 million. And the Administration's request for road construction virtually equalled their request for road maintenance in spite of an admitted backlog of over $400 million in maintenance needs. As Cuba Gooding Jr. said in the movie "Jerry McGuire," "show me the money." Chief Dombeck says that watersheds, restoration, and recreation are his agency's future. The budget the Administration submits doesn't reflect those priorities, but continues subsidies for logging at their current level. Then when the Congress makes the imbalance even worse, the Administration capitulates rather than fights to defend their own budget. No sooner is the ink dry on the FY 1999 spending bill than the FY 2000 budget will come to key Administration officials for their attention. The Clinton Administration must "walk their talk" by sending the Congress a budget that reflects what they say they - and Chief Dombeck says - are the agency's priorities. Then they must defend it in the legislative process next year. The timber industry's friends in the Congress will continue to seek funds to perpetuate abusive logging. Can we use the budget to focus attention on these abuses, and bring about real change? ### ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 23:55:42 EST From: JudiGregry@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Job Announcement - Earth Day 2000 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --part0_909636943_boundary Content-ID: <0_909636943@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII --part0_909636943_boundary Content-ID: <0_909636943@inet_out.mail.earthday.net.2> Content-type: message/rfc822 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Content-disposition: inline Return-Path: Received: from rly-zb03.mx.aol.com (rly-zb03.mail.aol.com [172.31.41.3]) by air-zb04.mail.aol.com (v51.9) with SMTP; Wed, 28 Oct 1998 18:02:13 -0500 Received: from mx.seanet.com (dns2.seanet.com [199.181.164.2]) by rly-zb03.mx.aol.com (8.8.8/8.8.5/AOL-4.0.0) with ESMTP id SAA14890; Wed, 28 Oct 1998 18:01:35 -0500 (EST) Received: from [192.168.1.1] (cr42.dialup.seanet.com [207.12.134.234]) by mx.seanet.com (8.8.8/Seanet-8.7.3) with ESMTP id OAA04652; Wed, 28 Oct 1998 14:57:02 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 14:57:02 -0800 (PST) X-Sender: pdrekmeier@seanet.com Message-Id: To: earthday@earthday.net From: Peter Drekmeier Subject: Job Announcement - Earth Day 2000 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit TimesFriends, Please help spread the word on this job opportunity.
