Subject: Free recycling containers

Hello, Mark Kennedy:

Does the "free recycling bin" offer include servicing of the bins? It
seems the costly part of the program is the collection from the schools. I
can see schools picking up on this offer, creating an appetite for
recycling among the teachers and students, and then finding themselves
encumbered (at taxpayer expense) with the ongoing operating costs of
servicing the bins, in good market conditions and bad...

Doesn't it make sense that the schools would work with the companies that
benefit from the supplier relationship with the school system, to develop
an agreement for a *reverse-distribution* system for used paper,
coordinated perhaps with delivery of new supplies? =20

It would make great sense for the sponsor name on the recycling bin to be
the name of the paper supplier, who was willing to take cradle-to-cradle
responsibility for his product, rather than an unrelated company who
enjoyed profile without ongoing commitment...

Groups Issue Recycling Challenge to Manufacturers

SACRAMENTO, CA - Coca Cola Company, the world's leading soft drink maker,
and many plastics manufacturers have broken commitments to use recycled
materials and reduce waste, say environmental and recycling groups in a=
joint
announcement today by the GrassRoots Recycling Network (GRRN).

"Consumers are being deceived by Coca Cola about the company's commitment to
recycling," GRRN Steering Committee Chair Bill Sheehan said. Dr. Sheehan is
a biologist and principal of the Athens, Georgia, based Zero Waste
Associates.=20

"Coke committed in 1990 to turn its used plastic soft drink bottles into new
bottles with 25 percent recycled content, but seven years later they are not
using a single ounce of recycled plastic in bottles sold in the United
States," Sheehan said.

The announcement came on the eve of the first national "America Recycles=
Day"
on Saturday, November 15, 1997. Sponsors are planning 3,000 events to
celebrate progress in recycling and boost consumer purchases of recycled
products.

"Consumer product companies must make new products or packages with recycled
materials that Americans put in home, office or drop off programs every day.
The theme of America recycles day is 'Keep Recycling Working: Buy Recycled.
Unfortunately, Coke and many other companies have broken their promise to
recycle," Californians Against Waste Policy Director Rick said. Best, an
engineer by training, is a member of the GRRN steering committee.

In addition to failing to use recycled content, this year Coca Cola began
test marketing a new, more expensive contoured aluminum can that is 15
percent heavier than existing cans. Mining bauxite and processing it to
produce aluminum creates one ton of caustic sludge for every ton of alumina,
leading to toxic red mud lakes which can contaminate ground water.

"The new aluminum can wastes energy and resources while increasing pollution
at every step, from the highly destructive mining and processing of bauxite
ore to manufacturing," said Pat Franklin, executive director of the
Washington, D.C.-based Container Recycling Institute.

"Coke's actions speak louder than its words about supporting recycling and
protecting the environment. When it comes to recycling and waste reduction
Coke needs to do the 'real thing' " noted Lance King, founder of the
newly-formed Consumer Environmental Alliance. King leads a GRRN campaign to
gain Coke's voluntary agreement to fulfill recycling and waste reduction
commitments.

"Consumers need to hold product manufacturers accountable for wasteful
packaging. The GrassRoots Recycling Network has collected thousands of
signatures on petitions to Coca Cola gathered by volunteers from more than=
60
organizations across the country," said King

The Coca Cola Company is the world's leading soft drink maker and holds a
commanding 43 percent share of the soft drink market in the United States.
Coke is a member of the National Soft Drink Association, which serves on=
the
steering committee of America Recycles Day.

GrassRoots Recycling Network representatives note that both individual
companies and industry groups need to take responsibility for their waste,
which includes using post-consumer materials to make products and packaging.

The plastics industry is also rapidly increasing its waste of resources.
Sales of virgin resin increased 10 times faster than growth in plastics
recycling in the past 2 years, according to industry data. Overall, less
than 5 percent of plastics sold in the United States in 1996 were recycled.

Plastics in food packaging, such as Coke's beverage containers, are=
replacing
other materials with recycled content, like glass, making it harder for
consumers to purchase products in recycled packaging.

"Georgians for a Bottle Bill launched a legislative campaign to put a
refundable deposit on beverage containers because Coke and other beverage
companies are failing to take responsibility for the waste of resources and
other adverse impacts on the community," Bob Woodall of the Atlanta-based
group said.

The GrassRoots Recycling Network challenges manufacturers on America=
Recycles
Day to take responsibility for product and packaging waste. Specifically,
manufacturers need to:
=B7 Reduce or eliminate packaging waste;
=B7 Make products or packaging that is reusable;
=B7 Use recycled content to make new products or packages;=20
=B7 Practice truth in advertising by labeling products with=20
post-consumer recycled content.

The Grassroots Recycling Network calls upon consumers to hold
manufacturers and retailers accountable for wasteful products and packaging.
Consumers can:

=B7 Purchase products with minimal or no packaging;
=B7 Buy recycled products labeled with post-consumer content;=20
=B7 Call or write manufacturers and ask them to use post-consumer recycled
materials.
=B7 Return a product or package back to the manufacturer or retailer, if it=
is
not
recyclable in your community.

The GrassRoots Recycling Network consists of more than 50 community-based
recycling, environmental and economic development organizations from across

In honor of America Recycles Day, some sad observations about paper NOT
closing the loop:

The only all-recycled commodity copy paper available in the
Northeast US, Unity DP, was discontinued this year due to inadequate demand
(despite being readily available from the major local office supply chain,
at a very good price). The best alternative, Eureka 100, is not distributed
in this part of the country. Other choices, such as Domtar, are impractical
for general use due to cost.

Impressive goals were set for newspaper recycling. Citizens pitched
in and mountains of paper were collected. Corporations and financiers were
convinced to build large mills, investing hundreds of millions of dollars.
But in the end, newsprint purchasers (newspaper publishers) have been
extremely resistant to paying any additional money for a more recycled
stock, and the large investments in mills have often gone to waste. And so
the market for collected material has been poor, and has to seek alternate
uses. And so we continue to needlessly cut down trees and pollute the
environment for our daily news.

Why not just boycott newspapers? I get all my information through the
Internet and other electronic media sources (and I am happy to say that,
due to the electric power industry deregulation/restructuring here in
California, 50% of the electric power used in my home will be from
clean, renewable sources starting in January). Careful searching and
researching of these alternative information sources has provided me
with all the information (and more) that is available from our local and
regional newspapers, but without the slanted delivery!

I urge others to explore the New Day and Boycott Newsprint!
