Ten composting technologies shortlisted by Metro Vancouver

By Rod Muir

With the introduction of foodscrap collection soon to be complete in the ten largest municipalities in Ontario, attention is now focused on Canada's second and third largest cities: Montreal and Vancouver.

How the foodscraps collected are to be processed is the most important starting point as subsequent choices flow from this decision including collection frequency, container and bag types and, to a lesser degree, education and promotion.

With this in mind, the results of Metro Vancouver's Request for Information and Qualifications (RFIQ) gives insight into technologies currently available in Canada.

The purpose of the the RFIQ was to "solicit information....regarding proven technologies employed at full scale facilities."

There were 23 responses with a total of ten shortlisted. They are:

Canada Composting Inc. -- operators of the Toronto Dufferin anaerobic digestion (AD) facility for the City of Toronto. This facility uses the BTA technology, from Germany, which, with 26 facilites, is the largest supplier of AD technology in the world.

Cascades Renewable Carbon Corp. -- plans a 25,000 tpy facility using Natura-Tech composting system which uses enclosed containers/boxes, similar to facilities in Halifax, PEI and the Ottawa Valley.

Engineered Compost Systems -- has two technologies containers/boxes similar to Natura -Tech and horizontal silos.

Orgaworld -- also uses horizontal silos at facilities in London and Ottawa (under construction) and in Europe.

Maple Reinders -- another use of horizontal silos (Christiens Brothers) at facilities in Hamilton and Peel Region as well as Europe.

Net Zero waste -- Gore cover system, in use at numerous locations in North America.

Organic Waste Systems -- Dranco AD, 18 facilites, avergaing 33 tpy, the largest 120,000 tpy in Spain but only presence in North America is a demonstration facility in Florida.

Yield Energy -- another AD process, with three facilites in operation in Europe but none in North America.

R-Earth -- uses the International Composting Corp. rotary drum, one of which is located on Vancouver Island.

To summarize, the ten technologies breakdown as follows:
Covered windrows: 1

Rotating drum: 1

Containers/Boxes: 1 ? 2

Horizontal silos: 2 ? 3

AD: 3

Among those excluded were International Biorecovery of Vancouver and Arrowbio, as well as two other AD technology providers and two ethanol producers.
