Wal-Mart to reduce plastic bag waste by 33% per store

Sept. 26 -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has committed to reducing its shopping plastic bag waste by an average of 33% per store by 2013.

It will eliminate more than 135 million pounds of plastic waste globally through the initiative by reducing the number of bags given out by its stores, encouraging the use of reusable shopping bags and give customers the opportunity to recycling plastic shopping bags.

The retailer should be able to eliminate the equivalent of nine billion plastic bags per year from its existing stores alone, said Matt Kistler, senior vice president for sustainability for Wal-Mart. It is developing it plastic bag reduction strategy in partnership with the Environmental Defense Fund.

"If we can encourage consumers to change their behavior, just one bag at a time, we believe real progress can be made toward our goal of creating zero waste."
