LOCAL RESIDENTS SOUGHT FOR REALITY TV CONTEST: ZERO WASTE CHALLENGE
Sponsored by Waste Management of Alameda County & KTVU Fox 2

August 11, 2008, OAKLAND, CA - Ready, Set, Recycle!  Waste Management of Alameda County and KTVU Channel 2 have announced the launch of a new reality-based TV show airing this fall on Channel 2. The Zero Waste Challenge features four Alameda County families competing to make the biggest reduction to their overall waste and carbon footprint in an innovative televised contest.

Prospective contestants can register at www.KTVU.com or by visiting their local ColdStone Creamery between August 11 and September 7, 2008. The Challenge is open to Waste Management customers who live in Albany, Castro Valley, Emeryville, Hayward, Livermore, Oakland, and Newark.

"We are incredibly excited about The Zero Waste Challenge," said David Tucker, Marketing Area Manager for Waste Management of Alameda County.  "Our customers and Bay Area residents in general are concerned about climate change and the impact their own carbon footprints have on the environment.  The Zero Waste Challenge lets us educate consumers about ways to reduce, reuse, recycle and rot in a fun format.  While the contest logistics limit it to Waste Management customers, everyone can play along and challenge themselves at home.  KTVU's website has a page dedicated to The Zero Waste Challenge with local resource links, zero-waste tips and more.  The way we see it, everyone wins in The Zero Waste Challenge."

During the four-week Challenge, four families will face off to see who can most greatly Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, & Rot their waste.  Along the way they, and viewers at home will receive tips about ways to  achieve zero waste.  Each week's challenge results will be televised on KTVU's "Mornings on 2."  The Challenge will take place between October 3 and November 5, 2008

Entrants will receive a free reusable, Zero Waste Challenge bag, while supplies last.  All four contestant families will each receive a Sony HD-Camcorder.  The family that reduces its waste the most will win a trip for four to San Diego on Southwest Airlines, along with two-night hotel stay, car rental, and four passes to SeaWorld.

The Zero Waste Challenge was originated by Waste Management of Alameda County and is being produced in conjunction with KTVU Fox 2.  Other sponsors include Sony, Southwest Airlines, Coldstone Creamery and SeaWorld. To learn more, visit www.ktvu.com
