[GreenYes] DRAFT Top 10 Reasons for Reducing Greenhouse Gases through Zero Waste - please provide input

The CRRA Policy Workgroup would like to compile the "Top 10 Reasons
for Reducing Greenhouse Gases through Zero Waste" to share at the
Policy Workshop on Reducing Greenhouse Gases through Composting
Organics 3/19 in Sacramento.

We've started a list below and would like others to contribute to
make this a Top 10 list. We'd like to add some convincing facts and
figures to support each of the points. We'd also like to add more
bullets on how much greenhouse gases could be stopped by achieving
Zero Waste (and equivalents to getting number of cars off the road,
or something else that's tangible).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Gary

Draft 1 -
Top 10 Reasons for Reducing Greenhouse Gases through Zero Waste

1. Landfills are one of the top 3 generators of greenhouse gases (GHG)
2. The methane generated from landfills is 23 times as aggressive as
CO2 in contributing to global warming
3. Zero Waste focuses on eliminating waste, and eliminating the 71
tons buried upstream for every ton buried in a municipal landfill
(and eliminating the GHGs associated with those wastes).
4. Zero Waste focuses on producers taking responsibility for their
products and packaging, which will cause them to redesign processes,
products and packaging to minimum GHG impacts.
5. Zero Waste focuses on reuse, which keeps products in circulation
longer that should reduce the impacts of producing new products and packaging.
6. Zero Waste provides economic and policy incentives for
individuals, businesses and communities to make it most economic to
eliminate waste.
