"The Ash Barge Odyssey"

Our film covers the 15-year saga of 14,000 tons of toxic incinerated ash

that left Philadelphia in 1986 on the cargo vessel Khian Sea and circled the

Caribbean Sea for the next 16-18 months in search of a dumping place.

On New Year's Eve 1987, the ship arrived in Gonaives, Haiti, a small
impoverished

port town on the country's west coast and illegally dumped 4000 tons of the
ash,

described as fertilizer, on the beach. The toxic ash remained in Haiti for
the next

ten

years until efforts by Greenpeace and various environmental activist groups
arranged

to have it brought back to the U.S.

The ash was removed from Haiti on Earth Day 2000 and is currently being held
in a

hopper barge on the St. Lucie Canal in Stuart, Florida, awaiting plans for a
final

resting place.

Meanwhile, the people of Haiti are still plagued with the destructive effects
of

Philadelphia's ash.
