[greenyes] Helen Spiegelman's Waste Subsidies Must Stop
I was very glad to see the summary of Helen Spiegelman's presentation to the Whistler B.C. AWARE group's annual meeting. I met Helen at the Rock Creek retreat at the time of the initial formation of the Grassroots Recycling Network and was impressed at her knowledge, her good sense, and her ability to identify and articulate the important issues. She hasn't lost her touch.

But it also reminded me that Whistler has a subsidized worm bin distribution program to get residents composting their organic food residuals. They take the position that the problem with bear in Whistler is great enough that they don't want people doing backyard composting because such systems attract bear. Since worm bins can be housed inside, and closed up to keep bear out, it is an effective way of handling the organics without running into bear problems. Just a tidbit of worm lore.
