Position Available:   Executive Director

Solana Recyclers, Inc. (SRI), is seeking an Executive Director to manage a 
dynamic environmental nonprofit organization specializing in regional (San 
Diego County) and national programs aimed at Waste Prevention, Buying 
Recycled, Pollution Prevention, Recycling, and Composting.  The mission of 
Solana Recyclers is to improve the quality of the environment through 
innovation, leadership, education and participation.

Responsibilities:
The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors to implement 
organizational goals and objectives through overall administration of SRI's 
programs and projects.  This includes organizational development, 
administrative oversight, strategic plan implementation, personnel 
management and fiscal planning/management.

Organizational Development and Management:
-       Provide overall direction for SRI programs to fulfill 
organizational goals and objectives;
-       Administrative oversight and evaluation of fiscally-sponsored projects;
-       Effectively communicate all aspects of SRI programs to the Board of 
Directors, local government, clients and community at large.
-       Implement policies of Board, act as liaison between Board and staff.
-       Development and maintenance of personnel materials, policies, 
benefits, procedure manuals and job descriptions;
-       Provide direction to Administrative/Fiscal Manager in preparing 
organizational and program budgets, monitoring expenses and revenues, and 
ensuring timely completion of required financial documents;
-       Ensuring accurate accounting for all funding sources of SRI;
-       Reporting to Board of Directors on monthly financial status.

Contract Management:
-       Prepare requests for proposals, evaluate proposals, hire and manage 
staff.
-       Developing and negotiating contracts with government agencies;


Qualifications:
College Degree or other relevant, proven field expertise.  Minimum 5 years 
work experience in solid waste, recycling or other environmental-related 
field. Minimum 5 years in management experience. Management experience with 
staff of 5-10 people.

Desired skills and qualities include:
-       Must have knowledge of environmental issues - familiar with 
recycling, solid waste, composting (small and large scale), buying 
recycled, pollution prevention and business development;
-       Budget development and management experience of $500k - $1million;
-       Demonstrated skills in developing, implementing and managing 
innovative programs;
-       Experience working with local government public officials;
-       Demonstrated contract/grant writing and contract/grant management 
experience, including budgeting and controlling costs;
-       Management experience with fee-for-service program operations and 
contract negotiation skills are required;
-       Strong organizational, leadership, communication, planning, 
diplomacy and
public speaking skills are vital, as is the ability to establish effective 
networks and liaisons with local and regional organizations and government;
-     Natural ability to be solutions oriented;
-       Personal satisfaction gained from bringing people together and 
providing a service that benefits the community and the environment;
-       Self-motivated and directed with excellent organizational skills, 
and time-management abilities
-       Proficiency with personal computers, email and internet

Founded in 1983, SRI is a leader in developing and providing the public 
with the information, skills, and tools necessary for effective 
environmental solutions. Long known as the pioneer of curbside recycling in 
San Diego County, California, SRI successfully transitioned from curbside 
recycling in 1996 to focus on the creation of new programs in environmental 
education, composting, pollution prevention, waste reduction, buying 
recycled, household hazardous waste, and supporting sustainable 
agriculture. SRI now serves as a solutions-based leader with extensive 
expertise in resource conservation based programs and activities. SRI's 
objective is to provide information and opportunities for citizens and 
businesses to take responsible action toward conserving natural resources 
and building a sustainable future.

New program areas:
         Recycled Products Purchasing Cooperative  nationally increasing 
the use of recycled content
              paper
         Green Press Initiative  working with major authors/publishers to 
increase use of recycled
             bookstock
         Pollution Prevention  local programs aimed at improving water 
quality and the environment
         Student Environmental Action & Leadership  empowering youth as 
environmental stewards
  Less Toxic Yard & Garden Care  "greening" our yard care practices for the 
health of families
  and the environment

Funding for the organization comes from fee-for-service contracts, state 
grants, EPA grants, foundation grants (local, state and national) and 
product sales.

Staff size 8: consists of an Administrative Manager, Program Director and 
two Program Associates for the Recycled Products Purchasing Cooperative 
(http://www.recycledproducts.org) and Green Press Initiative 
(http://www.greenpressinitiative.org), Program Manager and three Program 
Coordinators for Pollution Prevention, and Program Coordinator for Master 
Composters.
