RE: [GreenYes] Battery Recycling
The only facility that I know of that is recycling alkaline batteries in the
US is in far West Texas. Several years ago they had a fire at the facility
and had to evacuate the whole town. It would be interesting to see the
safety record and check out operations at the plant before you send
batteries to be recycled. You might also consider the fuel/resources that
are expended to transport the batteries to recover steel. You could be
doing more damage than good. We send our alkaline batteries to an EPA
certified facility where the drums are landfilled. The cost of recycling
was just too much even though we are in TX. Does anyone know of other
alkaline battery recycling plants in the US? Have any others been developed
in the past 5 years? The people that are offering recycling of alkalines
are brokers and are probably ultimately sending them to TX. I kind of
wonder about the true costs of European countries shipping their batteries
to TX also.
