Subject: State of Garbage in America report

The U.S. is wasting more and recycling less garbage, according to Biocycle
Magazine in their annual State of Garbage in America report
http://www.jgpress.com/BCArticles/2001/SOG2001/sogpdf.htm. In last year's
survey, Americans generated 409 million tons of municipal garbage, that's
about 1 ton per person. 32% of that waste was recycled. Pennsylvania
(wastebasket of the U.S.) tops the list for the most waste imported at
almost 10 million tons, while New York was the largest waste exporter at 5.6
million tons. Since 1997, the U.S. has been a net importer of municipal
waste, totaling over 60,000,000 tons. Municipal waste may be only 2% of the
total amount of waste generated in the U.S., according to the EPA.
Currently, the U.S. has no federal plan to minimize waste or maximize
recycling.
