The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other major newspapers have
been running articles about a fast propogating virus whose primary route
of infection appears to be through Microsoft e-mail and word application
software. There is a complete discussion of this virus, named Melissa,
at a Carnegie-Mellon computer web site whose URL is:
http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-99-04-Melissa-Macro-Virus.html
Apparently the virus is fairly easy to defeat once you know about it. As
usual, the best defense is not to open any e-mail attachment unless you
are able to scan it with anti-virus software that has been updated with
the latest virus definition files. Better yet, when in doubt - simply
delete.
Sincerely,
Roger M. Guttentag
