ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Drop-off Center Monitor opens and sets up the facility for use by
the public. She/he interacts with members of the public and assists them
in placing recyclables in the appropriate containers. He/she empties
recycling containers as needed and keeps the facility neat, clean and
accessible. The Monitor communicates as necessary with the recycling
staff regarding the operation of the Drop-off Center, including
attendance at two staff meetings per month. She/he sells home
composters to the public, which involves making correct change and
keeping simple records. The monitor also does simple clerical tasks
such as stuffing envelopes. The monitor closes and secures containers
and the site itself and prepares containers to be emptied by moving
obstructing tables and displays.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Director of Recycling, the Drop-off Center
Monitor opens up the drop-off center site before open hours begin by
opening the book exchange and all permanently-located containers into
which the public will deposit recyclables. Other portable containers
into which the public will deposit recyclables will be set out by the
Monitor in locations accessible to the public. The monitor will also
properly store recyclables left at the Center during non-open hours.
Seasonal tasks include raking the area free of leaves and salting and
shoveling snow as needed. The Monitor may need to use a snow blower to
clear the area, and may also need to operate a propane torch to de-ice
padlocks.

The Monitor must be present at the drop-off center during open hours,
which are 4:30pm - 6:30pm Tuesday and Thursday, and 8:30am - 3:30pm on
Saturday. During open hours, the Monitor greets each Drop-off Center
customer, directs customers to the proper recyclables storage containers
as needed, and as time allows, aids residents in removing recyclables
from their cars and depositing them in containers. He/she answers
customers' questions regarding the recyclability of items they have
brought to the Center, and about recycling programs in Cambridge in
general. At the direction of the Recycling Director, he/she distributes
printed information about recycling to customers. The Monitor removes
and stores full bags of plastics from plastics recycling stations and
replaces them with empty bags as needed. On a daily basis, the Monitor
disposes of all non-recyclable items left at the Center during non-open
hours and sweeps the drop-off center area. He/she provides recycling
bins to Drop-off Center customers who request them. The Monitor places
reusable items brought by customers in a designated space, and disposes
of items least likely to be reused when the designated space is
exceeded. He/she shifts material inside recyclable storage containers
as needed in order to make the most efficient use of space. The monitor
notifies the recycling staff when a container needs to be emptied.
He/she also maintains equipment and tool storage areas in a neat and
organized fashion. The monitor is responsible for properly storing
broken recycling bins and barrels for recycling.

The monitor sells home composters to the public. This involves
maintaining demonstration composters in working order, maintaining
informational signage in good repair, answering questions from the
public on features of the composters for sale, accepting checks and cash
from customers purchasing composters, making correct change when
necessary, keeping simple records on composter sales, and maintaining
the inventory of home composters in a neat and organized fashion.

He/she closes down the site after open hours are over by closing and
securing all containers and securing the site. As necessary, he/she
prepares containers to be emptied by moving tables, displays, etc that
would obstruct vehicle access to the container.

The monitor attends recycling staff meetings on the second and fourth
Wednesdays of the month, from 4pm to 5:30pm.The monitor also carries out
related duties, as specified by the Recycling Director. These may
include simple clerical duties, such as folding brochures, or stuffing
envelopes.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands of the job include bending and lifting of up to 40
lbs, and moving heavier loads with a hand cart. The monitor must be
able to ascend and descend a ladder and climb over the edge of a
recyclables storage container to shift recyclables as needed. He/she
must be able to drag wooden tables weighing approximately 150 lbs, and
must have the ability to carry out sustained physical activity such as
snow shoveling. A heated booth will be provided for shelter, but the
Monitor must be prepared to work outdoors in any weather.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Reliability is essential, as is an upbeat, welcoming attitude. Prior
experience working with the public is preferred. Basic home repair
skills desirable. Simple math skills sufficient to make change are
required. Reading and writing skills sufficient to keep simple records
and to understand simple printed material are required. Ability to
carry out responsibilities with care and completeness and to solve
problems without close supervision is required.

RATE: $10.00/hr
