"To a person, the major PET [No.1 soda bottle]
reclaimers report an increase in processing
problems due to the recovery of new types of PET
packages.

"The complaints come in many forms. PVC [poly
vinyl chloride] labels again are being used. New
colors create immense sorting problems and result in
contamination of RPET [recovered soda bottle
plastic]. New types of barrier labels are difficult to
process. Some new labels bleed or sink in the wash
cycle. New types of closures are being introduced
that are difficult to handle. Metallicized labels
increasingly are being used.

"As one major reclaimer says,'The use of design for
recycling concepts is slipping'."
