The journal "Resources, Conservation and Recycling" is dedicated to
publishing research such as described. A few examples:

Robert Ayres "Metals recycling: economic and environmental
implications" RCR 21 (1997) 145-173
Geraldo Ferrer "The economics of tire remanufacturing" RCR 19 (1997)
221-255
Geraldo Ferrer "The economics of personal computer remanufacturing" RCR
21 (1997) 79-108

Hi List members -

I am looking for studies/reports that document the benefits of
recycling,
including:

1. Jobs created
2. Energy conserved
3. Reduced use of natural resources
4. Reduced emissions from material extraction,
manufacturing
5. Reduced impacts from incineration or disposal

I am especially interested in fairly recent studies (say, less
than 5 years
old). Any suggestions would be welcome!

Also welcome would be other types of benefits that might also
be described
(improved balance of payments, expanded environmental or
community support,
etc.)

Thanks much,

John Reindl

To John Reindl:

Our forthcoming report for MASSPIRG analyzes and documents just about every
quantifiable economic and environmental benefit of recycling on which I could
find research data. The report should be out early in March. I don't know
if MASSPIRG will be handling distribution of copies, and at what price. But
put a note on your calendar to check with me or MASSPIRG after the first week
in March.

Our MASSPIRG report is specific to beverage containers - which means the data
apply to glass, aluminum, ferrous, PET and HDPE. For paper you should start
with Richard Denison's summary article, "Environmental Life-Cycle Comparisons
of Recycling, Landfilling, and Incineration," in Annual Review of Energy and
Environment, 1996: 21: 191-237. That gets you a lot of environmental
pollutants output per ton of paper product info, but you'll still need to do
the work of converting emissions data to dollar cost estimates (as Tellus
Institute's Packaging Study did), as well as adding the economic benefits such
as additional jobs that are quantified in our report for MASSPIRG.

Once you do the work for paper and make the employment impacts for all
materials specific to Wisconsin, you'll have all the numbers for all the
curbside recycled materials. Good luck!

John,
I suggest you check the website for the Institute for Local
Self-Reliance at http://www.ilsr.org and from their homepage go to the
sections labelled "What's New" ("A Chronological Listing of What's Been
Added to our Site") and "ISLR's Publications Brochure" which describes
the nearly 50 ISLR publications such as "The Economic Benefits of
Recycling (Monograph)" and others covering recycling/solid waste,
energy, transportation, and other resource management issues from a
variety of angles as well geographic perspectives.
I've often referred to "Beyond 40 Percent: Record-Setting Recycling and
Composting Programs" and while it has aged well since its 1991
publication, there are several other more recent publications.
A bonus is that with a purchase of $25 or more "Recycling Economic
Development: 25 Case Studies of Select Manufacturers" is available for
FREE, as is "Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Composting Programs:
Lessons from 30 U.S. Communities" (although it's not clear if they are
BOTH available for one $25 purchase). However, as the site states:
"FREE with purchase of $25.00 or more (S&H not included)".
Good luck,

Can anyone tell me the correct address for the 'Smart Office' reference given a few days ago? The given address (http://www.smartoffice.com) doesn't work for me.

Thanks, Hop.
