Subject: Metals content of glass

Franklin Associates did some studies a few years back on three metals in
the solid waste stream (lead, mercury and cadium). (They can be reached at
franklin@qni.com) As I recall the study indicated that the percentage of
lead in the solid waste stream from glass was 4%, but that doesn't tell you
how much lead is in leaded glass.

As for burning glass, I had always been under the impression that glass has
no BTU value, and hence would not burn... I suppose it can vaporize and
melt, though if the temps are high enough.

Is the bill available on the Net? Which state is it from, NC? In NYC we
are busy revising Intro 509, the NYC Government Environmental Procurement
bill, and who knows... maybe there's something in this bill we could use.

Subject: Tropicana takes the cake!

Here's another equally worthy cause (IMHO) to add to the Coke campaign...

Several months ago Tropicana, and maybe others, has changed the design of
its half-gallon juice cartons adding plastic pouring spouts. This now
makes all those juice cartons either unrecyclable in New York City's
program, now that we have finally gotten them to reinstate the additional
categories, or it will result in the waxed carton resource stream being
contaminated with plastic! NYC plainly tells everyone in its literature to
discard caps and lids (presumably because they are multi-material), and now
Tropicana adds an expendable feature which trashes tons of recyclable
resources.

Can't we ask them why?
