Joshua Reiser-
You asked for C&D recycling stories. In Wake
County, North Carolina, a non-profit called
Woodbin II has an interesting recycling project
underway with three contractors on five properties.
They're recycling as much construction debris as
possible from these custom-built homes and closely
tracking their progress. For more info, contact
Jason or Sally Beth at (919) 851-8444. You could
also obtain recycling stories from the National Home
Builders Association--contact Peter Yost at (301)
249-4000, ext 542.

You also may be interested in a couple of videos that
I produced. "Don't Trash It! Reducing Residential
Construction Debris" is a 24-minute video (12 minutes
in English and 12 in spanish) that gives contruction
workers tips for preventing waste, reusing and recycling
scrap materials generated on-site. "Old Buildings Don't
Have to Go to Waste" is a 23 minute video that shows how
to deconstruct old buildings; i.e. carefully dismantle buildings
so that wood, brick, stone, fixtures, etc. can be reused to
build new structures. Contact me if you're interested in the
videos.

Subject: Landfill Regs & Starvation

Dear Greenyes:

The letter to Mr. Gore from Fred Lee was rather interesting. I would like
to see his report if possible. It really does appear that Sub D has NOT
done what it was supposed to do. There are so many EXEMPTIONS and
extensions -- whatever happened to the financial assurance requirements?

It just seems that between landfill regs and court decisions on flow
control, the deck is stacked against recycling. Also my surveys find that
almost no local governments are doing true cost accounting. Landfill tip
fee surcharges are fairly effective tools but nobody want to pass new ones.

AND RE population growth, etc. I would like to see Mr Ackerman's book - I
have an old friend professor at University of Houston who is an expert on
technology transfer and third world economics. He wrote theory of
Technology. He is an optimist. Believes technology if applied correctly
will solve most of our problems. The problem is somehow the Africans were
never given the right tools to sustain themselves.

ERNEGY -- I went to the Rain Forest Cafe -- drove 20 miles at four pounds
of pollution per hour -- this place probably uses twice the energy of other
restaurants and the food portions are too large. I understand Americans
waste one out of every four pounds of food. Then they have a parking meter
you can put coins in to help save the rain forest. Hmmmmm.....

Subject: Request for Demolition Recycling Stories

The St. Louis County Office of the Solid Waste Coordinator (St. Louis,
MO), has been asked to speak before a group of local demolition
contractors about demolition debris recycling. Due to relatively low
landfill tip fees and many quarries in the state, however, St. Louis County
does not have much of a C&D recycling infrastructure. We would
therefore like to use this opportunity to basically "present" the idea of
C&D recycling to the contractors at this meeting. We would like to
provide them with examples of interesting and entrepreneurial C&D
recycling projects that have happened elsewhere and then pose the
question, "Why can't this happen here?"

I would appreciate it if someone could send me either an example of an
interesting case study, or tell me who to contact in order to find it. I have
already been in touch with Mike Taylor (NADC) and Bill Turley (C&D
Recyling) and have left messages at FACE and Recycling Today.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Joshua,

Try getting in touch with Gord Van Dyk at the University of Toronto
in Scarborough. A few years ago, they had a storage barn burn down
and were able to recover almost all of the materials. His e-mail
address is vandyk@tsunami.scar.utoronto.ca

This email is horribly impersonal, but I have misplaced many of your
addresses. I just wanted to say thank you to the many people who sent
me information about sewage sludge, garbage incineration, recycling and
composting information which hopefully will help the rural community in
southeast Louisiana who is battling dangerously polluting proposals.

Thanks to all of you, she has good information now.
Unfortunately, her governing body will not allow her organization
approach the council. Corrupt politics is alive and well in Louisiana.
Bad things are brewing down here. But at least, thanks to you all,
information to the citizens is now forth coming.

Thanks again.
