Subject: National Recycling Congress

Hi All--

What do I think we should do at the NRC this year? My suggestions are:=20

1) To have the Board and membership make a resolution to support Zero =
Waste and further this concept on a national level.

2) Request that we have a Zero Waste track at next year's NRC.

3) Make next year's NRC a waste free conference a la CRRA in Monterey.=20

As for America Recycles Day, as several folks have suggested and I =
support, we should include wherever possible the message of Zero Waste. =
Yeah, it's great that the corporations are touting Recycling and Buy =
Recycled, but we need to move the discussion and the actions further. =
Let's brainstorm on how to make this happen.

Have fun at the conference. Look forward to hearing about what =
happened.

Robin Salsburg
Monterey, CA

P.S. There will me a meeting of the National Waste Prevention Coalition =
at the conference. Sorry, I don't have the details of when or where, =
but this might be a great group to enlist for support and coordinate our =
efforts.

campaign to get Coke to use recycled PETE, or America Recycles Day?

3. Is NRC still a membership organization?

Need to know soon,=20

Subject: NRC Candidate Zero Waste Results

Hello all of you Zero Waste Lovers:
The CRRA asked all of the 11 candidates running for the Board of the NRC
several questions including some on their Zero Waste Opinions.
As of today I have had 9 candidates respond - ALL of them in support of
Zero Waste. The nine candidates who have come out and responded are:

Emily Nichols
Lisa Skumatz
Cat Wilt
Horace Morancie
Pete Pasterz
Dave Freeman
Bernie Brill
Cornelia Snyder
Laura Dellinger

In addition we have had several Board members express a willingness to
make and support a Zero Waste motion at the Board meeting at the NRC
conference this next week. The motion will be simple and basically state
that the NRC and its members support Zero Waste. There is discussion on
whether or not we ought to add some additional points on how to get to Zero
waste or the other two GRN messeges (Jobs from Discards, Stop subsidies).
Some people feel we need all the messeges, others (myself included) feel we
should start with the goal now and get into the how's later once we all agree
on the goal.

Please let us know how you feel and please let the candidates above know
that you support their support of Zero Waste.

And finally - If you are an NRC member, have not yet voted, and are not
coming to the conference, please send us you proxy so that your Zero Waste
voice will be heard.

Thank-you

Jennifer,

For hip, recycled accessories, you may want to try Blue Fish, Jennifer
Barclay's company in Frenchtown, NJ. T 908-996-3844 F 908-996-715

As for bringing ethnic, minority groups into recycling, there was a good
segment in the Planet Neighborhood series hosted by Bill McDonough last
week about such efforts in poor counties of Minnesota and LA.

Good luck,

Jennifer:

Firstly: with respect to ethnic and minority groups:

Try contacting the Chair of the National Recycling Council's
Minorities In Recycling Council (NRC MRC), Caroline Mixon. Ms. Mixon
may be contacted at: The MaCC Group, 1912-B Lee Road, Suite C2,
Orlando, Fl 32810, telephone 407 578 2848; Fax 407 578 2293 and e-mail

Secondly: re the cosmetics manufacturer:

The Exposition Hall at the NRC Congress & Exposition, September 22-24,
1997, Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, Walt Disney World, Lake Buena
Vista, Florida, may be a good place to find these items. The NRC MRC
may also be able to help.

Since I got no response to my initial posting of this request, I'm trying
again. I am working with some others to investigate how our state recycling
organization can become more representative of ethnic and minority groups in
the state. Does anyone out there know of similar efforts elsewhere?

Also, I am working with a cosmetics manufacturer that wants to sell in their
stores hip, good quality, and tasteful accessories made with recycled
materials. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to find these items?

Thanks.

Subject: Waste audit trainer needed

Is this something you will post for me?

The Atlanta Group of the Sierra Club is in the midst of a campaign to
promote recycling at restaurants and bars in three Atlanta neighborhoods.
We have surveyed quite a few of these businesses and they all seem to be
interested in having waste audits done to show them how and what they can
recycle. We will also pitch buy recycled and preferred packaging choices.
We are planning on a morning seminar in Atlanta on Saturday, November 15,
but need a good trainer to train some local Sierrans. We have budgeted
some money for travel. EPA Region IV has no one qualified and our state
folks are not really qualified either except on the hotel/motel end which
of course includes some restaurant waste reduction. We would like to lock
in a trainer by the end of September. Any ideas should be addressed to me.
Thanks.

Subject: ZeroWaste history

A hearty "amen, brother!" to recent postings by Ric Anthony and Steve Suess.
Finances prevent either Jim Jensen or myself from attending the NRC Congress
this year, but we wish those who are trying to get NRC to take the Zero Waste
pledge the best of luck. I get very fed up with the arrogance and ego/status
seeking that at times seems to permeate NRC Congresses and the organization
itself. So I do very much appreciate those willing to carry the Zero Waste
battle forward to the congress this year. We'll need to work at all levels
and cooperatively if we are going to slay the consumerism/elitism beasts. No
amount of recycling will prevent the ecological catastrophe that's sure to
ensue when everyone in the world has their own automobile, plenty of roads to
drive 70 or 100 miles an hour on, fast meat-based-food restaurants at every
major intersection or off ramp on those roads, and a computer to keep them
inside on the internet so they don't notice that Nature is disappearing.

Also, I wanted to write down a bit of Zero Waste history. We (Sound Resource
Management) first used the term in 1992 in a proposal to King County to
conduct an education and demonstration project in King County high schools.
We proposed to pick several schools and see if we could achieve zero waste
or close to it by implementing various kinds of innovative reduction and
recycling programs, including on-site vermicomposting for cafeteria food
wastes. We won the project, but some top level administrators of the King
County Solid Waste Division (KCSWD) freaked out about our zero waste concept
-- you readers of Greenyes know the story: "impossible", "unrealistic",
"we'll get laughed at by the garbage haulers", etc. So it became the 'Zero
in on Waste' project.

Despite the reaction of some at KCSWD, we still liked the concept and adapted
it as one of the headlines in the brochure we developed to use when doing
business waste audits and reduction/recycling program
initiation/implementation -- "Zero waste - a goal not just a dream."

In 1995 when we registered for the internet name ZeroWaste.com, we found out
that there's a firm in southern California that has a product for treating
water wastes that they call zerowaste. Their head guy called me up and tried
to buy the site name from us. When I refused he said we'd be hearing from
his attorney. Haven't yet and we now have our rudimentary web site under
that name as well as SoundResource.com, but at least someone other than us
crazy greenies thinks zerowaste has value.

We also tried to register ZeroWaste as a US trademark. The response from the
US agency that regulates trademarks was that neither our use of ZeroWaste as
a concept in our work nor our use of it as the name for our internet web site
constitutes use of ZeroWaste as a trademark in business. The attorney for
the agency was also concerned with how we could guarantee that we wouldn't be
confused with the waste water product which has zerowaste registered as its
US trademark. If we prevail at NRC and elsewhere at getting garbage folks
committed to zero waste, and/or if the concept begins to be used in widely
viewed messages or as the name of some widely known organization, someone of
us may get confronted by the company that has this trademark.

Jeffrey Morris
Sound Resource Management

P.S. For those who know we were off the e-mail "air" for a while, we did get
our ZeroWaste@aol.com screen name back from AOL after someone hacked into our
e-mail account and deleted it. Folks at AOL said we couldn't have it back
for at least 6 months, but then it mysteriously was activated again after
only a couple of months in absentia. Not only is the truth out there,
somebody out there must also believe in zero waste.
