PAUL HAWKEN ON RATE OF CORPORATE GREENING

Greenwire, November 2, 1995

GREENWIRE: Do you see a big shift in the way companies are doing
business in relation to the environment?

HAWKEN: No, I don't. I see a big shift in certain companies.
But I also see some real backsliders and CEOs who sit on the
President's Council for Sustainable Development and say one thing
and go right around to Congress and say something else. But they
are symptomatic of a system that is schizophrenic.

We need to ask, how did we design an industrial system that
allows us to think we prosper by destroying the world? How did
we create an economic system that tells us it is cheaper to
destroy the earth than maintain it in real time? I think we are
beginning to see policy-makers, CEOs, investors,
environmentalists and scientists realize that there are systems
solutions to current problems that are beyond the traditional
approaches, cyclical solutions that replace the take/make/waste
industrial system. It's happening. Is it happening fast enough?
No. Can it be seen on a radar screen? No. Is it affecting
policy in US government? No. But it's happening nevertheless.
