From the Latest Recycling News (10/17/08)
"Houston Looks to Recycle Ike"
The City of Houston is sponsoring a nationwide recycling contest to gather ideas on how best to use the estimated 5.6 million cubic yards of tree debris generated by Hurricane Ike.
The contest is offering prizes of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 for the top three ideas. Houston Mayor Bill White announced the contest, saying, "This will probably be the country's single, biggest recycling project this year."
Two local companies are expected to handle about half of the debris, with much of the material being turned into mulch. Any recycling ideas should be submitted recycleike.com by October 31st.
The contest is open to all interested parties worldwide, regardless of age, discipline, or professional status.
